About the Artist

Maria Ricci drawing at her studio table

I create paintings from repetition. The same stroke drawn by hand thousands of times, one by one, yet no two identical: each repetition carries the imperfections of the human gesture.

My work is contemporary and abstract. My inspiration lies in movement, in the physical, silent sensation of repeating the same wave thousands of times, until it stops being repetition and becomes language.

I am a Brazilian artist living in Virginia, United States. I am currently developing the Infinite Waves series in shades of blue: small gestures made with India ink pen and watercolor paint on watercolor paper, repeated by the thousands.

I hold degrees in Fashion Design and Speech Therapy in Brasil, and both live in my stroke. From fashion, I inherited an eye for detail, texture, and repetition: the pursuit of perfect alignment, precise stitching, an impeccable garment. In my waves, that rigor transforms: the stroke repeats thousands of times, but it carries the imperfections of the human gesture, and that is where my vocabulary is born. From speech therapy, I inherited listening: a deep attention to rhythm, because each wave I draw is also a gesture of patience, of presence, a dive into intimacy.

There is a starting point for the infinite waves, but there is no end. Movement is continuous, just like life. The stroke repeats countless times, yet is never identical, just as none of us repeats, just as each moment, each day.

Each work can be created in different sizes. Available pieces are on the site, and for other sizes, I accept custom commissions from the Infinite Waves Blue line via email at maricciart@gmail.com or by direct message on Instagram.
